Keeping Kitty Cool

June 15, 2021

Do you sometimes find your cat sprawled across the middle of the floor on hot days? If so, you’re not alone. This may actually be one of Fluffy’s ways of keeping cool, as kitchen and bathroom floors don’t usually get very hot. Of course, your kitty may also appreciate having some help in this department. Here, a Spring Hill, TN vet offers a few more ways to help your feline buddy beat the heat.

 Water

First and foremost, make sure that Fluffy always has plenty of fresh, cool water. You may want to get her a kitty fountain. If you have more than one cat and/or if you let your furball go in and out, set out multiple water stations. You’ll need to clean and refresh these daily, as otherwise the water will be contaminated by germs and bugs.

Climate Control

This may be stating the obvious, but the best way to help your furry friend stay comfy is to keep her inside, in rooms that have fans or A/C. If you do let your kitty go out, limit her excursions to mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out.

Brushing

Brushing Fluffy will help get dust and dander from her coat. These things can make your feline pal quite hot and itchy, and will interfere with the natural insulating properties of her fur. Choose a time when your kitty is relaxed, and incorporate lots of praise and attention.

Ice Cube Frenzy

On really hot days, drop an ice cube into Fluffy’s water dish. You can also put one on the floor for her, to see if she likes batting it around. Since those little toe beans help your cute pet regulate temperature, this is actually an easy—and adorable—way to keep your feline friend comfy.

Cold Snacks

Fluffy may be a bit more finicky about snacks than Fido is, but she’ll still enjoy a cold treat. Keep some liquid or semi-liquid treats in the freezer for your kitty. Or, drizzle some tuna juice over shaved ice. Your furball may also enjoy the occasional bowl of chilled sodium-free broth.

Beds

Fluffy will probably spend a good chunk of summer snoozing. Put some of Fluffy’s beds in cool spots. You can also offer her the occasional frozen towel to sleep on.
