Fall Care For Cats

Believe it or not, Labor Day is just a few days off. While we may still have some warm days ahead, it won’t be long before temperatures start to drop. As you start preparing for winter, don’t forget about your feline buddy! A Spring Hill, TN veterinarian lists some fall kitty care tips in this article.

Food

Animals burn extra calories in cold weather just staying warm. If you have a kitten, a senior cat, or a hairless feline, and/or if Fluffy is allowed outdoors, you may need to give her slightly bigger portions as the temperatures drop. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Shedding

Fall is a peak shedding time. As your furry buddy exchanges her summer wardrobe for thicker winter fur, you may find pet hair, well, everywhere. Try to vacuum daily, and remember to change your air filters out. It’s also a good idea to brush Fluffy regularly, so you can grab that fur with a brush before it ends up on your sofa. Cats with long and/or thick fur may benefit from hairball preventative.

Mischief

We always recommend keeping cats indoors. However, fall is a particularly dangerous time for them. Kitties will face quite a few dangers outdoors! Poisoning is one concern. Many of the chemicals people use in autumn, such as pesticides, fertilizers, and antifreeze, are highly toxic to cats. Fluffy could also have a run-in with a wild animal looking for a place to hibernate. Weather also poses a threat. Temperatures can plummet rapidly at this time of year! If you do let your furry friend out, limit her excursions to daytime. It’s also a good idea to set out a kitty shelter, just in case she ever gets caught in the cold.

Hazards

Candles, space heaters, and fireplaces are also dangerous. It’s very easy for Fluffy to get too close to a candle, or singe her fur by lying too close to the fire. Using thick grates and candleholders can help prevent mishaps.

Beds

Did you know that cats sleep even more than usual when it’s dreary or rainy out? Make sure Fluffy has lots of comfy beds for all those naps. Your drowsy feline pal may appreciate a heated bed or a thermal blanket to snuggle up in.
