It’s Adopt A Senior Pet Month! We love seeing older pets get loving homes. As the weather gets colder, our canine patients will start spending less time patrolling their new yards for squirrels, and more time curled up in their beds. If your dog is in his golden years, you may need to take a few precautions to keep him happy and healthy as temperatures plummet. A Spring Hill, TN vet discusses fall care for older pooches below.
Food
Some dogs need to eat a little extra when it’s cold. You don’t want to go overboard, though: Fido won’t be as active as he once was, which will make it easy for him to gain weight. Your furry pal may also benefit from certain supplements. Glucosamine and fish oil are often recommended for arthritic pets, as these can help lubricate stiff bones and joints. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Walks
You’ll probably be walking Fido after dark a lot over the next few months. Pay attention to the footing: you don’t want him to slip and fall. Wear boots or shoes with good tread yourself. We also recommend getting a reflective leash or harness for your pooch. You may also want to get a flashlight leash attachment.
Grooming
Our canine pals sport a variety of hairstyles, which all have different care needs. Keep up with your pup’s beauty care needs! Brushing and bathing Fido will help remove dead hair and dander from his coat. This is important for more than just appearance’s sake, as these things interfere with the insulative properties of your furry friend’s coat. Paw care is also important. Dogs’ paw pads often get cracked in cold weather. Using balm or wax on your pup’s feet will help protect them from damage.
Comfort
Small touches can really go a long way towards keeping your canine buddy comfy. Make sure he has a good bed to snuggle up in on those chilly nights! (Tip: orthopedic beds are great for older dogs.)
Weather
Keep in mind that older dogs are more susceptible to weather extremes than young ones. Pups with thin coats will need sweaters or jackets to wear when it’s cold out. Just make sure Fido’s outfits fit well, and are not tight, hot, itchy, or constricting.
