Celebrating The Poodle

November 20, 2021
Tomorrow is Poodle Day! Our canine companions come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and we love them all! A Spring Hill, TN vet turns the spotlight on this lovable, iconic dog below.

History

This lovable breed is available in many different coat colors and patterns, and in standard, miniature, and toy sizes. As to the breed’s history, there’s some confusion as to where they originated. Germany is one option. The very name poodle seems to support this. It’s derivative from the word puddeln, which translates into ‘to splash,’ which ironically is one of Fido’s favorite activities. However, in France, the poodle is known as the Caniche, which translates loosely into ‘duck dog.’

Coat

Poodles are most well-known for their unique fur, which can be quite curly. Those curls are naturally water-resistant, which is a clue as to Fido’s origins as a water dog. Your furry pal will need to be groomed regularly. You may also want to give your pup one of the 50 different hairstyle options he can wear. It’s worth noting that you’ll need to take good care of his ears, as they are prone to wax buildup.

Career

Poodles are very intelligent and sociable, and they need to stay busy and occupied. These traits even got Fido a job as a circus dog! This cute pup is so trainable he could even be taught to walk on tightropes and do magic tricks. Of course, the poodle also had many other job options, aside from running away to join the circus. He’s also been a military dog! Poodles also excel at many other doggy events, such as diving, surfing, and disc games.

Poodle Skirt

Poodles are of course known for their curly fur, but that isn’t Fido’s only claim to fame. We can’t forget about the poodle skirt! The classic 50’s statement piece was designed by a lady named Juli Lynne Charlot in 1947. As the story goes, Charlot needed a dress, but didn’t have money to buy one. So, she created her own … and started a huge fashion trend in the process. Interestingly, the first pup to be featured on a poodle skirt wasn’t actually a poodle. It was a dachshund! However, ‘dachshund skirt’ doesn’t quite roll off the tongue the way ‘poodle skirt’ does. Do you have questions about poodle care? Contact us, your Spring Hill, TN animal clinic, today!
