Tips For Adopting A Shelter Dog

November 20, 2021
October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! Of course, we think any month is a great time to give a sweet shelter dog a second chance. Adopting a new canine pal is a huge commitment, and something you want to put lots of thought into. Read on as a Spring Hill, TN vet offers some advice on adopting Fido.

Consider The Underdog

Don’t overlook that sad senior dog that’s been in the shelter for months, or the pooch people keep passing over because of some imperfection. Sometimes the pups nobody else wanted turn out to make the best animal companions!

Pick The Right Pup

Sometimes, people want a certain breed of dog. Others just have a rough idea of what they want as far as age, color, sex, size, or temperament. And sometimes people only need to glance at a cute furry face to be completely smitten. However, you’ll need to consider more than how cute Fido is. It’s important to pick a pet that will integrate well into your life and household. A jogger may do best with an athletic pooch they can go running with, while someone who prefers reading or gaming might find that a calm, quiet pup is their best match.

Be Prepared To Commit

When you take Fido home, you’re making a promise to care for him until the end of his natural life. That could mean a decade of pet parenting, or even longer. Make sure that you’re ready, willing, and able to make that commitment. Adoption is forever!

Do Some Research

Do research into your canine buddy’s breed and/or history. All dogs are unique, and have slightly different care needs. You’ll also want to ask your vet for specific care tips.

Be Prepared

Before you bring Fido home, have all of his doggy necessities ready. Your shopping list should include food, toys, treats, bedding, dishes, grooming supplies, and a leash, collar, and harness. It’s also best to do some petproofing. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Don’t Expect Perfection

Fido is a wonderful pet and companion, but he isn’t perfect. If he makes a mistake, don’t punish him. Positive reinforcement is a much better route. If you need to address any behavioral issues, consult a trainer or pet behaviorist. At your animal Spring Hill, TN pet clinic, we love meeting new patients! Please contact us anytime!
